James Martin was born circa 1828 in Co Kerry, Ireland, he was working in the Esperance District of Tasmania as a Sawyer and Splitter.  On the 28th April 1866 James married Margaret FAULDS who immigrated with her parents from Ayreshire in Scotland.  The only possible clue to James' family is a Henry Martin who was witness at the marriage which took place in the house of Mr. Hugh Armstrong, Davey Street, Hobart.

Four of James & Margaret's ten children were born in the Esperance district between 1867 and 1872.  By 1875 the family had moved north to Don in the Port Sorell District where a further two children where born.  From 1881 to 1889 the last four children were born in the Sheffield/Kentish district.

Margarets Fauld's parents David & Janet and some her siblings also moved north and lived in and around Barrington.

Because there are several James Martin's on the arrival and convict indexes at the Archives Office of Tasmania it is hard to establish on which ship he arrived.  His death certificate states that he was a resident of Australia for a period of 60 years.  This makes him arriving circa 1844.
