Buxton

Thomas Buxton from Mayfield, Staffordshire, England arrived in Van Diemen's Land  May 1821 per
the ship Westmorland with his wife Ellen (nee BOTT) and children: John, Mary Ann, Sarah,  Agnes
and Thomas.  The last four children: George, an infant son, Frances and Emma were all born on the
East Coast of Tasmania.

Thomas was first employed by William Talbot to manage his grant at Swanport.  He was later granted
land at Little Swanport.  He called his property "Mayfield" after his home village on the Staffordshire -
Derbyshire border.

Captain Thomas Buxton son of Thomas and Ellen married Elizabeth Smith. By 1862 Thomas and his
his family had moved to New Zealand to live.

Today there are no living descendants of Thomas & Ellen with the surname BUXTON in Tasmania.
Several hundred descendants of Mary Ann (Mrs John RADFORD), Sarah (Mrs William WOOLLETT),
Agnes (Mrs Thomas POOLE), Frances (Mrs Peter MITCHELMORE) and Emma (Mrs Thomas
WRIGHT) still live on the east coast and throughout Australia.
